okay, so i feel like an idiot after spending the last 20 minutes looking online, through the user guide, and even through the cd user guide that came with the monitor to no avail. i have an extra monitor (which is a widescreen monitor) to use with my laptop here at the chocolate shop for design - or the occasional movie/tv show viewing as we take a break between batches of product. it came with a stereo 1/8" cable for audio as well as an audio input on the back, so i assumed, it must have speakers inside. i checked various forums online which said that they were decent sounding 1.5" speakers. i could not get a single sound to come out of them at all... but was determined.
so, after looking over the 1/8" audio cord for crimps/cuts and then checking my output on my laptop several times; i came across a post with the solution to my problem. and it turned out to be in a not so obvious spot.
(or was it?)
HERE'S THE FIX.
it turns out that you do not have to scroll through any menus to get the sound to work. you just have to push the arrow buttons to adjust the volume. (pushing the little blue arrow to the right turned the volume up and pushing the one to the left turned it down.) seems so obvious, but i just assumed they were navigation arrows; not volume arrows. they are dual purpose arrows i guess.

i found this nowhere in the literature for the monitor. just kept reading "for audio in (optional) models" and wondering if i had one w/o built-in speakers. so, if it's too loud or not loud enough, just try pushing the arrows. duh.

i realize that if i post something about a specific place (and if they have enabled feeds to check when people use their name or speak about them) then they possibly will be able to read my post(s). i could view this practice as either a savvy marketing tactic or possibly a self-conscious attempt at monitoring all public relations about a particular entity. (or even just plain suspicious of everyone).

i have never thought i'd live during a period in world history where someone's personal posts would be raked and rummaged through in search of reasons for arguments and threats. is this like the mccarthy era where people dig up factual yet out-of-context information to scrutinize? this could be a problem if it came down to an employee bad mouthing an employer with defamatory language. but what if it's an individual stating opinions on a personal page? what if the person expressing their personal opinions happens to be someone who pays money to be where he/she is? what if those opinions are about events that are not helping him/her feel good about giving money to be in the environment that he/she has found him/herself in? what if this person is spending more time/money cleaning up other people's messes? what if personal property is being destroyed because of the recklessness and lack of supervision of others on the property?

how many times can issues be addressed before one reaches their wit's end?

one such example? a weekend-night spent shoveling a mud/rock/insulation/sawdust slurry up off of the filthy concrete floor above in an attempt to redirect an increasing deluge that's been running through the crack in the floor above and into the light fixture over equipment used specifically in the preparation of food. what could lead to or cause an event such as this? perhaps a giant hole in the outer wall of the suite immediately above carelessly covered (partially) with an unsecured (and too-short) tarp following a previous storm ripe with tornadoes?

so you say a blog or a facebook page isn't personal property because it can be accessed online on the world-wide web? if it has a password or a set of rules to access the information (like a lock on a personal diary - much like the way facebook pages can exist if the page is set to be viewed only by those granted access by the page's creator) then it is not for the world to view - as much as you'd like to believe it is. it's meant for those who have been given the privilege to access the information - the trusted with similar morals, such as family or real-to-life friends.

so what's the point i'm getting to with with all of this?
simply that if you dig around in search of things to be upset about, then chances are, you will find it. and if you search for things (especially in places where you don't have proper access to - say, someone's private diary or facebook account when they're not looking) then you deserve to read all the mean things you find. (and if they're aren't any mean things, then i hope you misinterpret all the private things you read as being directly pointed at you). i hope you are offended because you deserve to be.

i borrowed a scanner from my brother to scan some old negatives. it doesn't like my new laptop (supposed to be able to scan from "preview app.") apparently, something is off.

i was watching "an idiot abroad" on the science channel and caught the end of a commercial for a show called "ingenious minds." i recognized one of the artists featured: George Widener.
while living/working in asheville, NC, i frequently framed a number of pieces he brought into the frame shop where i was working. he was busy traveling here and there (he mentioned Berlin on occasion) to exhibit openings and selling his work. i remember his work having the appearance of antiquity. it seemed very fragile, yet he'd just finished it. he worked on found scraps of napkins and pieces of paper, and often replicated the look of old masters' sketches by working with a reddish/orange pencil. he would sorta laugh as he mocked the "educated" artists/gallery owners/art historians by saying things like, "they couldn't tell me that this isn't just as important or good as a sketch by some renaissance artist."

if he had told me that he'd just bought a sketch by some unknown 15th century master, i would've probably believed him. they were meticulous and fragile with the type of details that usually get glossed over or dismissed by first year drawing students who are in too big of a hurry to take time to notice. yet, they had the ease of a snapshot. a memory/glimpse of a field with a fence and bunching of trees way off in the distance. it's what drawing instructors refer to as "the economy of line."

later, i'd get to see his work dealing with numbers and dates which came out of his life with Asperger's. i also met a stock broker who purchased a piece of his with dates from 'black fridays' throughout history. he had a thing for important (often bleak) dates. often, it felt as though he was about to crack some code; working slowly towards it.
for months, i tried to refrain from the normal, "oooh me next!' type of interaction that a few of the frame shop workers had had with him. you could tell him your date of birth and he could tell you the day of the week on which you were born. i finally gave in and told him mine. he said, "thursday" without even having to think about it. (i checked it against a website built around dates and he's right.) he usually would also give you a tidbit of historical info about the date as well. George seemed to interact with us differently than i would associate people with Asperger's syndrome (cautious/not looking at you while speaking to you/etc). he seemed very personable and polite. maybe it was because we were all curious about his art and asking questions? i always thought of his artwork as the most interesting work to come through the doors while employed there. i had framed a warhol, a chagall, some dali prints; but this work was more cerebral - like a puzzle to figure out.

I have been wary of things flying out of dumptrucks and smashing into my windshield lately (b/c that's what happened to me on the day before thanksgiving, leaving a huge circular crack in my window). I was informed by the owner of the truck company that the driver was hauling a mix of gravel and concrete known as "pug."
I was behind this truck w/ dangling bits of who knows what trailing behind. Turned my stomach as it appeared to look like the butt end of a truck (if it were a living creature).

ok. so something happened these past couple weeks and i was able to conceive and create a new thing. it hearkens back to another piece i did w/ a mountain in it w/ a cube at the top. i thought of it as "artist's block" and even named it such. so this one is called "loose knot" and came about through a combo of 2 things that kept showing up in the studio. a loosely tied knot out of this string and a shiny image of a mountain (given to me by neva and dan - was in iowa, now in chicago). so, i think of aspirations and disappointments rolled into one with this. i plan to make more things of this nature. thanks bill for including me in a curated show in Australia, and thanks to jeremy/lee for including me in the show scheduled for Grinnell, IA and Croatia. also, thanks to mark for giving me a reason to consider it finished (it's in a show at Chattanooga State right now).

so, i hooked up an old scanner and scanned some 35mm shots from a tour that "title one" and "the knight and chicken at the great wall of china" did back in (i think) 1999 or 2000. (basically two bands consisting of the same members switching up some instruments and adding a few players). we went from chattanooga, tn to athens, ga to charlottesville, va to baltimore, md to new york city, ny and were supposed to play a few shows in between (maybe somewhere in pennsylvania on the way back through - but it didn't happen for some reason). we had a great time and learned how to get two sleeps out of one night's room charge by driving through the night and booking the room mid-day, sleeping there and then going out for a bit, playing a show, and sleeping again to wake the next morning and hit the road. it was ridiculous how giddy you can get when there's five of you in a minivan trying to sleep in the parking lot of a TGIF restaurant. title one and the knight and chicken both have myspace pages, i think.

so, the top photo is in athens, ga and the bottom is in charlottesville, va. the athens show had lots of the elephant six/neutral milk/olivia tremor control/gerbils folk around (it was formerly a brothel where we were playing); and the charlottesville show was in an arts space where a guy named *tom showed up. kenny said, "i think we'll be staying with tom" and i said, "i'll strangle him in his sleep if we do." so we didn't and drove on through to baltimore from virginia (we'd actually driven from athens, ga to play the show in virginia, so we essentially drove from athens, played a show, and drove to baltimore which = insane.). *tom had tried to play along with our songs with a bucket and a stick and a trombone - which could've been good if he'd ran it by us before jumping in mid-set and just confusing us on our changes (title one did have some weird time signatures and changes sometimes which i had to closely count out to keep up with).

ok, so here's two shots of "the knight and chicken at the great wall of china" on stage at the ottobar in baltimore, md. john played in a sleeping bag, eric dressed as a plumber, i was the conquistador, and jim wore a beard/wig/sometimes dress combo for the set. we finished this set, changed clothes, and did a "title one" set right afterwards. one of the guys in "roads to space travel" said, "that was like some kind of minutemen set; i think you guys did like, 50 songs or something in 30 minutes."

we were playing in athens, GA (probably 1999) and this is a shot of my warming up my keyboard, mic, and drums. the keyboard is a korg polysix which finally gave up the ghost - and i've since found a virtual version - but continue to try to revive the original from time to time. i used to play the keyboard at the same time as the drums on some songs. usually though, it was just a drone-y type thing to fill in some sub frequencies.

back when i was in 3rd to 5th grade i was into rap/breakdancing stuff exclusively. this is one tape i listened to... brought my radio to school and played it on the playground. i just found this online and couldn't believe someone uploaded it. it has a megamix on it of all the songs included on the tape mixed together into a longer song... it was perfect for breakin' to... i keep saying "tape" when it was on vinyl for everyone who actually had turntables. i had the tape and a big boom box w/ 3 speakers in it.

i am constantly laughing at myself for posting things on facebook. i'm always wondering what the point of it is. i used to have the slogan/banner "always self-indulgently thinking you care" under the heading on this blog b/c i figured, who really cares what's coming out of my noggin and into this online forum?
it's scarier when people (i've esp. noticed it from those who use twitter) don't have anything original to post, i.e. "@RT" as in "re-tweeted" from someone else...
i see it used way too often.
i just wonder if it's a product of online information overload - as in "i'll just google it if i don't know anything about it."
instead, it's like, "well, if i have nothing original to say then i'll just find somebody's original idea and copy/paste it to my own post."
i've always been a bit leery of people who use quotes to introduce ideas for the same reason.

so, does anyone else find this guy annoying?

not sure if "cheese" exactly describes carson daly. i'm just constantly amazed at the attempt to keep his show hip. for example, he'll be standing in front of a camera while being filmed by another camera with both cameras cutting back and forth from black and white to color. he's also usually somewhere outside on a street corner or something. it just seems like he's trying too hard. it could be the frat-guy phrasing he uses as well. abbreviating words that don't need it and such. i usually turn the channel quickly.

i just recently broke out a couple books, both of which are about building your own guitar pedal effects. my brother-in-law, scott, is working on a fuzz pedal that has 6 knobs on it. it seemed so great for him to jump right into a complex type of thing; and after i looked at the schematics, i'd like to jump in. i keep finding variations on this pedal (and others) so i'm gonna post some stuff here to reference.

so my brother has this keyboard that is pretty incredible. he found it at a thrift store and it's called the "bee gees rhythm machine" made by mattel. i don't know of any bee gees song that sounds like anything on this keyboard. you can hear some sounds of the "machine" on a site with a virtual version of it here. they left the best part of the machine off though. it's a little knob on the back (next to the volume knob) for tuning the keyboard and it bends the pitch of the notes as you play the keyboard. too bad there's no virtual version of this. if you find one, snatch it up b/c they're selling on ebay for too much.

i got a link to this from adam trowbridge. he does more coding than i do, so i had reached out to him for a bit of info about making windows open within a website's page. he sent me to "lightbox2". i knew it was over my head, but i watched a tutorial on it and voila! now the hot chocolatier's site has lightbox images. check it out here. if you click on an image, it blackens the screen and opens the image to a larger resolution image. i love it. i wanna do this all over the place. this exercise made me learn a tiny bit of what html/javascript/css was all about. i'm still a bit lost.. but learning.

i recently had to revisit the npr site to see what song they were playing during a spot for the movie "500 days of summer." the interviewer for npr was discussing the role of soundtracking a movie and used this movie as an example b/c the director has done a number of music videos. i recognized the voice singing the tune as that of morrissey of the smiths. but was it a solo thing or a smiths' song? i am no morrissey scholar, nor have i ever professed the love of his voice as many have. so, i had to dig out the smiths/morrissey discs i've referred to (in the past) as "wendy's-cds-that-were-incorporated-into-my-collection-when-we-were-married." i do not outwardly claim to be any better of a music critic than anyone else who has worked at a used cd store, read trouser press and spin alternative guide front to back, said that they would grab the harry smith's folk anthology from any co-worker who took it in (used) - purchase it and then quit their job, or hunted down "lick my decals off, baby" b/c someone in passing said it was captain beefheart's best. i never had a proper introduction to the smiths and skateboarded to the cramps, misfits, and bad brains around the time that other (seemingly more depressed-than-i) fellow teenagers were discovering their music. the song turns out to be "please, please, please, let me get what i want" and is the last track off of the smiths' "hatful of hollow" release.
(i have to half-heartedly apologize to mary mccampbell for singing in the morrissey-esque voice back when she'd select anything of his to play in the store.) i say his voice is still kinda weird though. (on a side note, i just checked her blog and morrissey's new album was on her most recent post at the time that i'm typing this.) i've always been curious and will occasionally ask people who like the smiths why, in fact, they do - mainly because it seems like such an acquired taste. like a certain way you may prefer a slightly-burnt piece of garlic bread over a perfectly toasted piece to go with your lasagna. (maybe a bad analogy, but you get the idea).
once in a while, i'll get sorta hung up on tracking down an album or song to the point of becoming annoying, but this time wendy saved me the struggle by quickly scanning the backs of the nine smiths/morrissey discs i had exhumed from boxes over the garage and said, "this is it."
so, maybe i'm becoming a new found smiths listener, or more understanding of his "turtle-turtle" (from dana carvey movie "master of disguise") type vocal phrasings, or i'm yearning for some music with lyrics that don't seem trite or recycled from previous songs. possibly, i'm just another hipster taking music cues from npr's latest interviews. but, i'll just say now that if the movie sucks, i don't really care b/c it gave me the chance to hear how wendy came to the smiths and why she liked it back then. (and it also gave her a chance to "one-up" me on some music).

i just realized that my grandfather (on my mom's side) had the same name (cecil) as the turtle on that bugs bunny episode (tortoise beats hare) where he calls his cousins up and concocts a scheme to beat bugs at a race. so, here's the weird part. my grandfather's brother's name was chester which is the name of the turtle who cecil calls up on the phone. see here for details.

ok, so i've become officially addicted to the podcast of two guys (somewhere in/near atlanta) named charles (or chuck) and josh. they do a podcast about random facts and oddball things that you normally would wonder about but never investigate... i am subscribed.

To any interested blog reader; my facebook phone application has directly affected my posting to this. I have ranted about so much there that this forum has become neglected. I hope to post less on facebook and more on here. While I can't post images (or links) as quickly to this blog as facebook allows, I will try to address the problem w/ my camera phone uploads.
